Hélène Chean, born in 1992 in Tremblay-en-France, is a French painter who questions the conflict between man and his environment. Painting, a place of expression to represent unrealistic unrealism, allows him to testify to the vulnerability of humans and nature.

Canalisation & Self portrait

Sensitive to epic stories (those which amplify the cruelty of nature) I question the conflict between humans and their environment. Painting, as place of expression to represent unconstrained unrealism, allows me to testify to man's vulnerability to natural hazards. In a context where ecological balance inevitably depends on human intervention, I am also interested in polluted and toxic areas for biodiversity, including humans themselves.
The polluted spaces that I paint reflect traces and itineraries. It could be a street corner I walked through the day before, a hazy memory, or a photo from a trip to the countryside. In the case above (left) these are pipes seen in China.

On the right, the self-portrait which takes the form of a "walk" reflects homelessness. Walking allows me to identify with a place, to develop emotional links with it.

To form a fresco at the edge of fiction and reality, the iconography of my paintings brings together a large panel of images including universal myths (Kraken, Umi-Bozu, Nâga ...), the history of art, my personal history (Cambodian memory, childhood), newspapers etc.

Les poissons volants

Memory of a suspended landscape in Portugal to which I added "flying fish". I frequently resort to fish because they represent easy prey in the face of Man's mad desires for conquest and expansion.

Le lavabo / The sink in which I cleaned my brushes during my residency at Villa Belleville. A painting through which I point out my own behavior to circulate waste in water.

Barbecue

Calm hiking trail in Le Locle (Switzerland) taken in 2019 to which I transposed a rudimentary barbecue photographed in 2014, in a Chinese village near the city of Wenzhou. The canvas (without frame) is suspended and evokes the tarpaulin.
